THE MAJOR PROBLEMS FACING THE CONSUMER WHEN CONSIDERING A GREEN ECO OR SUSTAINABLE HOME

Quite often builders will make claim to a green, eco or sustainable home simply because they supplied one item such as a photovoltaic hot water system or a rain water tank this is just scratching the surface and does not constitute a green eco or sustainable home and simply building a home with lighter materials and a skillion roof definitely does not constitute a green, eco or sustainable home.

JUST THE COLOUR GREEN OR CLAIMING THE WORD GREEN DOES NOT MAKE FOR A GREEN HOME OR GREEN PRODUCT

What constitutes a green home or green product.

To meet criteria for a green home or a green product they should be sustainable – using products manufactured from a resource that is not depleted or permanently damaged. They should be eco friendly – showing concern for the environment. They should be energy efficient – energy efficiency– being able to reduce the amount of energy used by large appliances in the home. Recycling: green products should be able to be recycled when they reach the end of their lifespan.

The design of the home should incorporate all this criteria as well as design for shade coefficient in summer and allow for entry of sunlight in the winter.

Most information available on green homes does not address the retrofitting of existing homes however the four main principles of criteria should be addressed when considering retrofitting green products to the home.

CONSIDERING ALL THE PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET CLAIMING TO BE GREEN, ECO, SUSTAINABLE, ORGANIC

Quite an amount of these homes and/or products have been created and live up to these claims. However the boundaries have been stretched as quite often some homes and products claiming to be green, eco, sustainable and organic simply do not meet the criteria to claim the use of these words. So ask the questions filter the answers when considering building a new home and purchasing building material products, or retrofitting products into an existing home.
